The Modern Treasures & Present Future Auctions by AstaGuru Achieve Outstanding Results

The AstaGuru Auction House finished two recent auctions, 'Modern Treasures' and 'Present Future,' on September 27, 2022.

The 'Present Future' contemporary art auction held on September 22-23, 2022, grossed a total of INR 14,61,30,835. (USD 1,873,435). This was followed by the much-anticipated Modern Indian Art auction "Modern Treasures," which took place on September 25-26, 2022, and included aggressive bidding for rare pieces by renowned modernists. The auction garnered a remarkable INR 70,34,88,536 in sales revenue (USD 9,019,056).

The Vice President of Client Relations at AstaGuru Auction House, Sneha Gautam, said, "We are ecstatic with the outcomes of both auctions. With these auctions and catalogues, we sought to examine the evolution of Indian art, from the forefathers of modern Indian art to the lively contemporary art of today. The findings are evidence of the ever-expanding art market, with seasoned collectors seeking to add rare pieces to their extensive collections and amateurs seeking to diversify their collections with modern works.

"Present Future - Contemporary Art's High Points:Two pieces by the renowned British-Indian artist Anish Kapoor led the auction. Lot 81 from the artist's extensive collection of stainless steel discs was purchased for INR 6,95,58,792 (USD 891,779). The sum of INR 79,69,500 was paid for his other work, lot number 17, an example of his reflected smaller-scale sculptures (USD 102,173).Lot number 56, an amazing piece by the artist Valay Shende, was purchased for INR 59,05,953. (USD 75,717). The nameless sculpture is composed of his distinctive circular discs and is inspired by the interaction of atoms and molecules.

Lot number 80, 'Swimmers Manual' by Nataraj Sharma, was sold for a total of INR 41,32,755. (USD 52,984). The artist's passion in examining the interaction between human figures and urban settings is shown by the artist's breathtaking mixed media and oil on canvas work.

Lot number 23, titled "Garden Song," by renowned artist Senaka Senanayake, was sold for INR 25,46,620. (USD 32,648). This colourful oil on canvas is exemplary of the artist's work influenced by the verdant nature of his native Sri Lanka.

Modern Treasures - Modern Indian Art Highlights:A 1973 masterwork by the renowned artist Tyeb Mehta, lot number 22, commanded the highest price at the Modern Treasures auction, for INR 25,29,41,062. (USD 3,242,833). The oil on canvas painting from the artist's renowned Diagonal series was made at a period when the theme and its application had become crucial to his creative process.Lot 13 by M.V. Dhurandhar was purchased for INR 4,815,449 (USD 617,361). The 100-year-old picture shows the Draupadi Vastraharan, one of the most critical events from the Mahabharata. This moment, immortalised in brilliant colour by Dhurandhar's ability to combine western academic realism with traditional Indian ethos, would go on to serve as the impetus for the epic fight.Lot 18 ('Paysage Aux Fleurs & Nu (Diptych)' by Akbar Padamsee was auctioned for INR 5,00,94,000. (USD 642,230). The right panel of the diptych displays a naked lady alone, a subject that Padamsee was intrigued with throughout his career, while the left panel is a lovely but barren landscape that conjures a feeling of isolation.The price paid for lot number. 41 of M.F. Husain's 'Raj' was INR 4,55,400,000. (USD 583,846). The expansive piece is part of his very first British Raj series. The series documented the visionary artist's creative brilliance, his many insights, and his penchant for depicting the personal and political in his artwork.The extraordinary large-scale crosshatch titled "Partition 1947" by Jogen Chowdhury was auctioned for INR 3,53,58,015 as lot number 36. (USD 453,307). The renowned artist's mixed-media piece is a meditation on loss, continued violence in the globe, and human suffering.
