The newest timepiece from Roger Dubuis's Urban Culture Tribe series was unveiled recently. The Excalibur Sorayama Monobalancier was co-created by the two companies and the famous Japanese artist Hajime Sorayama, whose "Sexy Robots" are recognised for their hyper-realistic femininity. The Swiss watchmaker invited him to the Manufacture to redesign the watch's most recognisable feature.

Hajime Sorayama went against the Maison's aesthetic standards when he made the incredibly complex watch. Rounded curves and a high-sheen polish hide the sharp design and contrasting finishes often associated with Roger Dubuis's masterpieces. Inspired by his own renowned works, Sorayama recreated his sculptures in three dimensions using a polished titanium. The artist reimagined Roger Dubuis' micro-rotor to create a captivating moiré optical illusion actuated by the wearer's own fluid wrist movements. Months of in-house development went into finding the best combination of materials, decorations, and finishes to achieve this impression.

Final implementation combines conventional three-hour guilloché method on selected portions of the reimagined micro-rotor with an assembly procedure that positions a stamped sapphire dial atop the micro-rotor, resulting in exceptionally accurate and ideal spacing between each line of the stamped décor.

There is an automatic calibre in the Excalibur Sorayama Monobalance. For this watch, the power reserve of the RD720SQ was increased by Roger Dubuis engineers to a whopping 72 hours. To further improve stability and make it less vulnerable to shocks, the moment of inertia of the balancing wheel was raised, and the micro-rotor was calibrated to eliminate vibrations. Energy transmission and efficiency were further enhanced by using a new lubricant, modifying the escapement wheel's design, merging it with adjustable pallet-stones, and making both components from diamond-coated silicon.
