Bentley Motors and The Macallan Introduce The Macallan Horizon

Bentley Motors and The Macallan recently unveiled the innovative design of The Macallan Horizon, the first limited-edition single malt whiskey made via their brand relationship.

The prototype of The Macallan Horizon combines traditional craftsmanship, recyclable materials, and an unique horizontal design in order to reflect the partnership's commitment to innovation and its fundamental value of sustainability. The concept, the result of considerable collaboration between Bentley Motors and The Macallan, represents a shared aspiration to establish a sustainable future from the rich legacy of both businesses.

In tribute to The Macallan's celebrated Six Pillars — the brand's foundational pillars responsible for its distinctive single malt whiskies – The Macallan Horizon features six distinctive recycled, reused, or ethically sourced materials that are fundamental to both The Macallan and Bentley Motors.

A Balance of Six Principal Sustainable Materials

The prototype bottle that has been co-created is unlike any whiskey bottle in history. The distinctive shape contradicts the conventional vertical aesthetic of a whiskey bottle and represents the horizontal trajectory of an automobile, pushing the limits of the feasible and the art of design. The vessel thus rests horizontally in a purpose-built cradle and lacks a standing base.

At the heart of the design is a hand-crafted glass bottle with a 180-degree twist, symbolising the mastery of space and time gained by The Macallan and Bentley Motors in the creation of the prototype.

The vessel is then enclosed with a 3D framework that is beautifully twisted and made from a variety of gorgeous, sustainable materials. The structure's arms are made from:

Aluminum retrieved from the construction of the Continental GT, Flying Spur, and Bentayga at Bentley's headquarters in Crewe, England Copper salvaged from The Macallan's old distillery's defunct, peculiarly tiny spirit stillsRecycled wood from both manufacturersThe world's lowest CO2 leather, obtained locally in Scotland, and also used in the ultra-exclusive Bentley Mulliner Batur grand tourer launched yesterday. The amazing single malt whiskey being made for the unveiling, which tells its own tale of sustainability.

Chris Cooke, Manager of Product and Lifestyle Design at Bentley, comments:

"Our prototype for The Macallan Horizon is genuinely innovative in design and material selection. It is a combination of the clearly defined but curvy Bentley design DNA, the inventiveness of The Macallan, and recycled materials from both great British companies. The design's shape has enabled us to consider light as a material in its own right, and the interaction between light and reclaimed wood, aluminium, and copper is spectacular. It exemplifies what is to come from our relationship since it is both a beautiful product in and of itself and has such strong sustainability components.

The Macallan's Global Creative Director, Jaume Ferras, comments:

"Inspired by the automobile industry, we are presenting the creative evolution of The Macallan Horizon, one of the most innovative initiatives we've undertaken in our 200-year existence.

"Working with Bentley Motors has changed our perspective. Everything in the whiskey industry is upright, including our stills and bottles. The horizontal orientation adopted by Bentley Motors within the car business prompted us to examine whether or not we might adapt this style for whiskey, which must eventually be poured.

"As part of our commitment to a better society, I am very pleased of the groundbreaking design we've produced for The Macallan Horizon and the innovative sustainable materials we've included. It is the epitome of the uncompromising quality sought by The Macallan since 1824 and would not be achievable without the unparalleled craftsmanship and inventiveness for which both The Macallan and Bentley Motors are recognised.

The Macallan Horizon will be released in the summer of 2023.

In July 2021, Bentley Motors and The Macallan established their worldwide brand alliance. Both companies have agreed to exchange insights from their respective businesses while continuing to seek the uncompromising quality for which they are known. The Macallan Horizon honours their unity and aspiration for a brighter future.

Regarding Bentley Motors

Bentley Motors is the most coveted luxury automobile manufacturer in the world. All of the company's activities, including design, R&D, engineering, Mulliner, and manufacture of its five model lines, Continental GT, Continental GTC, Flying Spur, Bentayga, and Bentayga EWB, are headquartered in Crewe. The mix of excellent workmanship, using skills passed down through generations, technical experience, and cutting-edge technology is distinctive to British luxury automobile manufacturers like Bentley. It is also a prime example of high-quality British manufacture. Bentley employs over 4,000 individuals in Crewe.

The Macallan was established in 1824 on a hilltop above the River Spey in north-east Scotland. Each bottle of single malt whiskey reveals the distillery's unparalleled command of wood and spirit. As part of its aim to leave a good legacy, The Macallan unveiled its award-winning new distillery in 2018 as part of its dedication to social and environmental responsibility. The structure, which was designed by globally renowned architects, was inspired by the surrounding old Scottish highlands and is situated on The Macallan's stunning 485-acre Estate. The sherry-seasoned oak barrels from which The Macallan's single malts acquire their characteristic flavours, smells, and natural colour are, to this day, the single largest impact on the company's sought-after selection of single malts.
