One of The Leaders in Private Aviation, Learjet To End Production in 2021

They say all good things must come to an end.

One of the shining stars in the private aviation industry globally, Learjet the Canadian-owned but American headquartered, business jets producer will soon call it a day.

A bit about Learjet

Founded by Bill Lear as Swiss American Aviation Corporation in the latter part of 1950 in Wichita, Kansas, United States; Learjet was ragingly popular among some of the wealthiest and the most well-known personalities like the legendary vocalist Frank Sinatra, Hollywood actor Marlon Brando, American Singer, comedian & actor Dean Martin and so many more. Learjet was surely a luxury in the world of private business jets that most of the wealthy folks loved wholeheartedly.

Learjet was among the earliest corporations to produce a private, luxury aircraft. The initial design created by Lear Jet was inspired by Marvel - an experimental American military plane. The design exchanged fuselage-mounted turbojet engines for ducted fan turbo shaft engines. The initial design was not persisted for a long time and was replaced with a design inspired by the FFA P-16, a Swiss ground-attack fighter aircraft from the 1950s.

Learjet was acquired by Bombardier in 1990.

Decision to close Learjet

As per communications shared by its parent company Bombardier INC, the Learjet brand will halt production around the end of year 2021. Bombardier recently declared about the closure of this distinguished jet brand in its yearly financial report for the year 2020. Montreal headquartered Bombardier which specializes in manufacturing business jets has planned to now pay attention to the Challenger and Global aircraft range aiming for higher profitability. This would apparently impact the jobs of almost 1600 people at the company.

Bombardier plans to continue with Learjet’s headquarters in Wichita, Kansas utilizing it as a support center. It will also launch a RACER remanufacturing program for the Learjet 40 and Learjet 45 planes. The entire exercise will involve refits and enhancements, including exterior components, new avionics, high-speed connectivity and engine enhancements.

The Endearing Legacy of Learjet

Learjet has successfully delivered 3,000 plus aircrafts from the time in entered into the business jets business almost six decades ago.  There is no question that the exemplary Learjet aircraft has etched itself, absolutely deservingly, in the world of business aviation history.

Why?

As per business aviation experts and analysts, the communique by Bombardier INC is definitely not unexpected. One of the prime reasons is that Learjet has a much lower profit margin compared to the Challenger and Global aircrafts that the company manufactures too.

Also there is a stiff competition from corporations like Embraer and Citation. Apparently they offer identical business jets in the very light and light categories which are less in cost compared to Learjet.Of course there are multiple other factors that affected the company's decision but all in all the legendary Learjet will finally bid adieu to the private business aviation world in 2021.
